The New Bern Bears will challenge the Heritage Huskies on Friday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as New Bern comes in on five and Heritage on 17.
New Bern is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Tuesday. They came out on top against South Central by a score of 5-1.
Anna Champey spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on two hits.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Andersyn Lane, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Bella Colon was another key player, going 1-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, while Heritage put up plenty of runs on Tuesday, the same can't be said for Topsail. The Huskies were the clear victors by an 11-0 margin over the Pirates. The result was nothing new for the Huskies, who have now won 17 matchups by six runs or more so far this season.
Scarlett Ellis was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 13 over six innings pitched. Those 13 strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one home run and three RBI.
In other batting news, Janiah Vargas was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Lydia Bollinger, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
New Bern's win bumped their record up to 18-3. As for Heritage, their victory bumped their record up to 21-2.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Friday as neither team is afraid to steal. New Bern has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.3 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Heritage struggles in that department as they've been averaging 2.7 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
