The Goshen Central Gladiators are taking a road trip to challenge the Minisink Valley Warriors at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Goshen Central is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.5 runs per game this season.
On Monday, Goshen Central didn't have quite enough to beat Warwick and fell 4-3.
F Mitterbauer spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned (and two unearned) runs on 11 hits and racked up eight Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Stephen Kovacs was cooking despite his team's loss, going 3-for-4 with one run and one double.
Meanwhile, Minisink Valley entered their tilt with Monticello on Monday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They never let the Panthers get on the board and left with an 11-0 victory.
Nicholas Parco made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out nine over 4.1 innings pitched. He also tossed no walks, which is notable because Minisink Valley is 3-1 when he allows at most two walks, but 3-5 otherwise. Parco was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with two stolen bases and one run. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Gavin Capper, who went 2-for-3 with five RBI, one triple, and one run. Another player making a difference was Gavin Brown, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
Minisink Valley always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .519. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive games.
The win got Minisink Valley back to even at 6-6. As for Goshen Central, their loss dropped their record down to 7-5-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Goshen Central has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.1 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Minisink Valley struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Goshen Central was able to grind out a solid victory over Minisink Valley when the teams last played two weeks ago, winning 4-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Gladiators since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
