Ronnie Benfield and Dallas Mantz made a splash while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Benfield struck out ten batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and five unearned) runs off seven hits (and not a single walk). Meanwhile, Mantz pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Those ten strikeouts gave Benfield a new career-high. At bat, Benfield scored three runs and stole Two bases. while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances, while Mantz scored a run and stole Two bases. while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Benfield also scored three runs, which is notable because South Davidson is 3-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 0-4 otherwise.
In other batting news, Zander Floyd was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing Five bases. while going 1-for-2. He is becoming a predictor of South Davidson's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 3-1 (and 0-4 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Dalin Johnson, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3.
Meanwhile, after soaring to 17 runs the game before, South Stokes was a bit more limited in their game on Tuesday. They came up short against Mount Airy, falling 11-1. The Sauras haven't had much luck with the Granite Bears recently, as the team has come up short the last five times they've met.
South Davidson's win was their first in the conference, bumping their conference record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 3-5. As for South Stokes, their loss was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 5-5.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. South Davidson has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.2 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like South Stokes struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
