Thousand Oaks (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) senior wide receiver
Richard Mullaney caught 19 passes for 303 yards and three touchdowns Friday night during a 57-34 playoff loss to Oaks Christian (Westlake Village, Calif.).
The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Oregon State recruit finished the year with a Southern Section-record 120 receptions – one short of the California state record.
He set many school records, including yards in a season (1,667) and a game (303) and catches in a career (200) and game (19). He also set school records for touchdown catches in a year (20) and career (28).
On defense he tied school records for interceptions in a year (8) and a career (14).
Coach Mike Leibin told MaxPreps that he surpassed or tied records held by current Houston Texans receiver Dave Anderson and Matt Luft, who played at Harvard. Both of them were on the varsity for three years, while Mullaney had only a two-year career.
"He has a different gear with the ball in his hands, which makes him real dynamic," Leibin said. "He's also a great route runner. His ball skills are the best I've ever had."
Leibin pointed out that two years ago, he had a tailback, John Lister (now at the University of Hawaii), who rewrote all the school rushing records. Now Mullaney had done the same thing to all the school receiving records.
