Weddington (Matthews, N.C.) had its advantage, which at one point stood at 13 points, drop to six before the final whistle blew on a 20-14 victory over
Piedmont (Monroe, N.C.).
After taking the lead on a touchdown pass by
Justin Carson to
Omar Boyd in the second quarter, the Warriors led 13-7 at the half.
Weddington grew its lead to 13 points entering the fourth quarter. WHS scored once in the quarter on a touchdown pass by Carson to
Ryan Black.
The Matthews school went into the matchup giving up only 9.4 points per game.
The loss comes after Piedmont defeated Marvin Ridge 27-16 last week. The win was a nice bounce back for the Warriors, who lost to Sun Valley last week, 25-22. The loss snapped Piedmont's two-game winning streak.
Piedmont (7-3) will play a 3A Conference 8 game against Cuthbertson next week, while Weddington (8-2) will take on Marvin Ridge also in a 3A Conference 8 game.
