Just in time for the upcoming high school football season, Netflix will roll out Season 1 of "Titletown High" on Friday — a look at the turbulent Rush Propst-led
Valdosta (Ga.) program.
This is the second time Propst has been the subject of a reality TV program, starring in MTV's "Two-A-Days" years back. He was fired in April after the Valdosta Board of Education failed to renew his contract amid a scandal that included allegations he was involved in recruiting, mishandled money and even interfered in the hiring process that brought him to the program to begin with.
Michael Nelson, who has been involved with the Valdosta Touchdown Club booster organization for many years, said in his sworn deposition that Propst, among other things, paid for housing for two transfers, facilitated recruiting of players with the help of college coaches, asked for a "funny money" slush fund and meddled in his own hiring process.
Among the cast are quarterback
Amari Jones, lineman
Jacarrius Peak, tight end
Grayson Leavy and
Jake Garcia, a California transfer to the Wildcats last season. In addition to the football players, several females are highlighted among the cast, including a few listed on MaxPreps volleyball rosters for the Wildcats.
Garcia's transfer seemed to set off the controversy surrounding Propst after an interview by Garcia's father with ESPN raised questions about the transfer's legitimacy. Garcia, who is at the University of Miami, played in one contest for Valdosta before the Georgia High School Association opened an investigation into his eligibility.
Multiple Georgia news stations reported in September the presence of TV cameras, boom mics and production crews following the team.
Following the season, Valdosta was stripped of all its wins, banned from the 2021 playoffs and fined $7,500 after more players were found to be ineligible.
