Basketball Recap: Roanoke Rapids Comes Up Short

Roanoke Rapids played a tough matchup on Tuesday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They took a blow against the Rocky Mount Gryphons, falling 72-19. The Yellowjackets haven't had much luck with the Gryphons recently, as the team's come up short the last seven times they've met.

When it comes to explaining why Roanoke Rapids lost, don't look at Shaniah Daniels. Despite the final result, she posted six points in addition to 11 rebounds and five blocks. Daniels is on a roll when it comes to boards, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last 14 games she's played dating back to last season.

Rocky Mount was led to victory by Keysha Mizzell and Aniya Cotton. Mizzell went 10 of 23 on her way to 24 points along with five assists and five boards, while Cotton dropped a double-double on 14 points and 13 boards. That's the most assists Mizzell has posted since back in February of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Kenya Marshall, who went 5 of 11 on her way to 10 points and six rebounds.

Roanoke Rapids' defeat dropped their record down to 5-5. As for Rocky Mount, the win (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 10-1.

Roanoke Rapids didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 64-28 victory against Southeast Halifax on the 9th. As for Rocky Mount, they will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Franklinton at 6:15 p.m. on January 17th. Franklinton will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something Rocky Mount surely won't give up without a fight.
