Basketball Recap: Birmingham Takes a Loss

Birmingham lost against Chatsworth back in January of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Wednesday. The Birmingham Patriots lost 79-58 to the Chatsworth Chancellors. While losing is never fun, the Patriots can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 261st, while the Chancellors are ranked 73rd).

When it comes to explaining why Birmingham lost, don't look at Mandell Anthony. Despite the final result, he posted 19 points. Anthony's afternoon made it five games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was X'Zavion Mc Kay, who almost dropped a double-double on 11 points and nine boards.

Even though they lost, Birmingham smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 22 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in eight consecutive matches.

Chatsworth's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Alijah Arenas, who almost dropped a double-double on 20 points and nine assists. Arenas has been hot for a while, having posted 15 or more points the last 52 times he's played. V'Elijah Miller was another key player, going 7 of 9 en route to 22 points and seven rebounds.

Birmingham's defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 11-9. As for Chatsworth, they pushed their record up to 13-7 with the victory, which was their 13th straight at home dating back to last season.

Birmingham wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 79-62 win against El Camino Real on the 31st. As for Chatsworth, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 62-44 victory against Granada Hills Charter on the 31st.
