With 14 touchdown passes in his first two games, Davidson Day (Davidson, N.C.) quarterback Will Grier is the early favorite to earn MaxPreps National Player of the Year honors. However a number of other candidates have also thrown their helmets into the ring.
Each week, MaxPreps will track the favorites for the honor of National Player of the Year. While it's still very early in the season, here's a look at our first 10 candidates:
MaxPreps National Football Player of the Year WatchWill Grier, Davidson Day (Davidson, N.C.)In a pair of blowout wins, Grier has thrown for 670 yards on the season with 14 touchdown passes. He completed 16 of 25 passes for 309 yards and seven scores in a 61-6 win over Albemarle on Aug. 23 and followed that effort with 17-of-24 passing for 361 yards and seven more touchdowns in one half of play in a 68-0 rout of North Raleigh Christian Academy. The yardage against North Raleigh put Grier over 10,000 yards in his career. Only four other passers in North Carolina history have thrown for as many yards as Grier (10,246). Chris Leak of Independence (Charlotte) is the state's all-time leader with 15,593 yards.
