Both Manchester Regional (8-2) and Lakeland Regional (9-1) have made it this far into the playoffs, but they square off this Friday to determine who is worthy to move on. Both the Lakeland Regional and Manchester Regional defenses have allowed few points this year (averaging 12 ppg and 11 ppg, respectively).
Last week, Manchester Regional took on Waldwick/Midland Park. Manchester Regional's defense put the team in a good position heading into the break, holding Waldwick/Midland Park to a measly zero points. That put Manchester Regional at a 6 - 0 advantage. The defense continued to do well in the second half, holding Waldwick/Midland Park to six points. That ultimately gave them a 19 - 6 win.
As for Lakeland Regional, it has netted another blowout to add to its collection (now totaling five) after its most recent game. It kept its opponent Mahwah off the scoreboard entirely last week, winning the match 33 - 0. Two standouts for Lakeland Regional were junior Michael Mckay and senior Kelvin Gonzalez; the former rushed for 146 yards and one touchdown while the latter ran for 101 yards and also punched in three touchdowns. Mckay supplied the game with one of its most unforgettable moments, a 80-yard punt return for a touchdown in the first quarter.
While both teams are coming off of wins, only one will triumph this week. We'll find out soon enough who that will be.
