The Smithfield Sentinels will head out to take on the Chariho Chargers at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Smithfield is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.6 runs per game this season.
Smithfield is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Rhode Island's top teams: Ponaganset, who was ranked 20th at the time (Smithfield was ranked fifth). The Sentinels put the hurt on the Chieftains with a sharp 15-4 victory on Monday. While the Sentinels didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-13), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Smithfield got a massive performance out of Sophia Parrillo, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, four RBI, and one stolen base. Those three runs gave Parrillo a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Madison Kennedy, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with four runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Smithfield was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .464. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Ponaganset only posted a batting average of .316.
Meanwhile, Chariho beat Ponaganset 8-3 on Thursday. That's two games straight that the Chargers have won by exactly five runs.
Adriana Jeannenot made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out 15 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all three of her plate appearances with three runs, one double, and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Kesten Hanks, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run. Brianna DeGiacomo was another key player, earning one RBI and two runs.
Smithfield's win was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 6-2. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.6 runs over those games. As for Chariho, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 6-4.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Smithfield has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Chariho struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 9.3 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Smithfield suffered a grim 9-1 defeat to Chariho when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Can the Sentinels avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
