Basketball Recap: Monarch Takes a Tough Playoff Loss

Monarch and Columbine squared off in some playoff action on Saturday, but Monarch had to settle for second. They received a blow as they fell 76-58 to the Columbine Rebels. The Coyotes were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Rebels apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in December of 2023.

When it comes to explaining why Monarch lost, don't look at Sienna Williams. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double with 33 points and 18 boards. Williams is also on a roll when it comes to blocks, as she's now posted two or more in each of the last eight games she's played. Another player making a difference was Charlotte Weiss, who shot 45% from the field on her way to 16 points and six assists.

Columbine's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Taylor Speir, who went 11-for-18 en route to 26 points and five steals. That's the most steals Speir has posted since back in December of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Jordyn Washington, who shot 75% from the field to rack up 20 points.

Monarch's loss ended a ten-game streak of away wins and brought them to 15-9. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 54.2 points over those games. As for Columbine, they are on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 12 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 18-6 record this season.

Monarch does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Columbine, they will square off against Cherry Creek at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Columbine knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past three matchups -- so hopefully Cherry Creek likes a good challenge.
