It was a good run, but the Gates County Red Barons unfortunately witnessed the end of their six-game winning streak on Friday. They took a 59-41 bruising from Northeastern. Gates County lost against Northeastern in their previous head to head back in December of 2022, too, but the margin this time around was much closer than the 72-25 score last time.
Despite the defeat, Gates County saw an underclassman step up: London Barber scored 12 points along with nine rebounds. Barber has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last five times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Kyndall Banks, who scored ten points along with five steals.
Jasmine Felton continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Northeastern, dropping a double-double on 30 points and 16 rebounds. That makes it six consecutive games in which Felton has scored at least 25% of Northeastern's points. Sanai Alexander was another key contributor, scoring seven points.
Gates County's loss dropped their record down to 8-2. As for Northeastern, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 5-1.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Gates County and Martin County will face off at 6:00 p.m. on January 3, 2024 without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Martin County is coming into the matchup on a three-game losing streak. As for Northeastern, they will be playing at home against Holmes at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Holmes will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings (they are ranked 254th, while Northeastern is ranked 69th).
