Oberlin hasn't had much luck against Black River recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Phoenix will square off against the Pirates at 5:00 p.m. Oberlin has given up an average of 16 runs per game this season, but Wednesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Oberlin came up short against Keystone on Tuesday, falling 18-1. The Phoenix have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Oberlin saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ziaire Williams, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one RBI.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Black River). They put the hurt on Clearview with a sharp 15-1 win on Tuesday. The result was nothing new for the Pirates, who have now won four games by nine runs or more so far this season.
Rebekah Miller made a big impact no matter where she played. She struck out eight batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Miller was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with two RBI and one double.
In other batting news, Black River got a massive performance out of Jenna Dieter, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI. Madelyn Stief was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.
Black River hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in four consecutive contests.
Oberlin's loss dropped their record down to 1-3. As for Black River, the victory got them back to even at 5-5.
Wednesday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Oberlin has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .548. However, it's not like Black River struggles in that department as they've averaged .459. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Oberlin suffered a grim 15-0 defeat to Black River in their previous meeting back in May of 2023. Can the Phoenix avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
