Berlin is 0-4 against Southington since May of 2022 but things could change on Friday. The Redcoats will face off against the Blue Knights at 6:00 p.m. Berlin will be looking to extend their current seven-game winning streak.
Berlin is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Connecticut's top teams: Enfield, who was ranked 25th at the time (Berlin was ranked 17th). The Redcoats came out on top against the Eagles by a score of 4-1 on Wednesday.
The team relied heavily on Julia Matan, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, two RBI, and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Izzy Andersen, who went 2-for-3 with one home run.
Meanwhile, Southington entered their tilt with Bristol Eastern on Wednesday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They blew past the Lancers 8-2. The Blue Knights might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 13 games by six runs or more this season.
Angie Insogna spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on five hits and racked up nine Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Reagan Salvatore was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run and four RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted over her last 12 matches. Another player making a difference was Aubrey Perugini, who went 1-for-2 with one home run and two runs.
Southington hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Bristol Eastern struck out nine times.
Berlin pushed their record up to 18-4 with the victory, which was their fourth straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.5 runs on average over those games. As for Southington, their record is now 17-4.
Friday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Berlin hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .412. However, it's not like Southington struggles in that department as they've averaged .350. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Berlin might still be hurting after the 15-0 loss they got from Southington when the teams last played on May 14th. Can the Redcoats avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
