Basketball Recap: Volunteer Comes Up Short

Volunteer played a tough match on Thursday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They were outmatched by the Grainger Grizzlies and fell 63-36. While losing is never fun, the Falcons can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Tennessee basketball rankings (they are ranked 247th, while the Grizzlies are ranked 106th).

When it comes to explaining why Volunteer lost, don't look at Scarlett McClaran. Despite the final result, she went 8 of 13 on her way to 18 points along with seven rebounds and three blocks. The game was McClaran's third in a row with at least 16 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Emilee Mailloux, who posted seven points and five steals.

Grainger found their leader in freshman Brookelyn Roach, who went 8 for 10 to rack up 19 points in addition to five boards and four steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Roach has scored all season. Adison Hayes was another key player, putting up 14 points and three steals.

Volunteer has traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five contests, which has put a noticeable dent in their 13-15 record this season. As for Grainger, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matchups, which provided a massive bump to their 16-11 record this season.

Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing Greeneville the next time they take the court. Grainger will host Greeneville at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, while Volunteer will head out to face them at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
