On an early and chilly Monday morning on Jan. 11 in Gainesville, Florida the
P.K. Yonge girls volleyball team was honored on the 11th Annual MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard, which is in its sixth year honoring volleyball. MaxPreps only selects 10 girls volleyball teams out of 13,000 each year and the FHSAA Division 3A champion P.K. Yonge is certainly a worthy team to celebrate as they were ranked No. 4 in the entire country.
Before the ceremony began the girls volleyball team arrived to receive their commemorative Tour of Champions shirts from Staff Sergeant Michael Holmes of the Florida Army National Guard. SSG Holmes proudly shook each players hand and congratulated them on their outstanding season.

Moments later, students began filing into the gymnasium for the presentation of the prestigious and highly respected Minuteman trophy. Principal Dr. Cathy Atria began the ceremony with contagious excitement and enthusiasm. Dr. Atria expressed how proud she was of the stellar girls volleyball team and proceeded to introduce MaxPreps representative Danielle Ferrante who announced the Blue Waves’ No. 4 national ranking. The crowd acknowledged their accomplishments and responded with loud cheers.
Next, SSG Holmes and P.K Yonge alum Private Gessing made their way to the microphone. SSG Holmes spoke well about the team's incredible season and the importance of recognizing excellence within the community. As he finished commending the team, he presented head coach Chad Davis and the team with the Army National Guard national ranking trophy.
Coach Davis was truly grateful as he received the Minuteman trophy and mentioned that he was really looking forward to the young team’s continuation of success and hopefully another invitation to the Tour of Champions. Lastly, he expressed his gratitude and thanked MaxPreps and the Florida National Guard for this prestigious award and national recognition.
