5A Region IV District 31 recap Oct. 17, 2012
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Weslaco, who took down 351st ranked Weslaco, 24-6.
McAllen Memorial was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from eighth to third in 5A Region IV District 31. The Mustangs beat Rowe 31-28 earlier in the week.
San Benito's dynamic duo of Jesse Jimenez and Johnathan Guzman proved tough for Weslaco East to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Jimenez threw for 54 yards and Guzman had 46 yards receiving. Jacob Ledesma helped San Benito's passing attack out by catching three balls for 36 yards.
Trevor Speights was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 294 yards on 33 carries as McAllen Memorial lost to the Wildcats. Teammate Joel Alonzo added to the ground attack by rushing for 83 yards.
Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial's Manny Mancillas and Jaime Borrego have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Mancillas has thrown for 719 yards this season, while Borrego has 22 catches for 438 yards. Bill Littleton's team's Speights leads the league in rushing yards with 897.
A big matchup in 5A Region IV District 31 this week will be when San Benito takes on McAllen. Spencer Gantt's team is in fourth place, while the Bulldogs are in first place.
Weslaco East moved up to 274 from 376 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. Armando Cuellar's team climbed the ranks as a result of besting the Greyhounds 14-9.
