Wheeler moved up to 164 from 194 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in Greater South Shore. The Bearcats climbed the ranks as a result of a 45-13 win over River Forest.
Whiting extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating North Newton, 27-7. The victory was the sixth in a row for the Oilers.
Whiting's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. AJ Veloz threw for 147 and two touchdowns and Patrick Petruf had 101 yards receiving. On the ground Ethan Young chipped in 165 yards. Justin Jendreas helped Whiting's passing attack out by catching one ball for 29 yards.
Jeff Cain's team's Veloz and Petruf have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Veloz has thrown for 1042 yards this season, while Petruf, a 6-foot-2 receiver, has 23 catches for 536 yards. The Spartans' Chad Schultz leads the league in rushing yards with 543.
Two of the top units in Greater South Shore will face off this week when the Oilers take on Calumet. Whiting's offense has scored 245 points this season, good for No. 1 in the league, while the Warriors have allowed only 256 on the year.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when South Central takes on North Newton. The Satellites are currently in second, while the Spartans are in fourth.
Wheeler was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from fifth to third in the league. Earlier in the week, Tony Klimczak's team triumphed over the Ingots 45-13.
