Katie Ankrom was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off five hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in six consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Madison Boren, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, one triple, and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April of 2024. Bailey Waughtel was another key player, going 3-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Portsmouth was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .429. They are 3-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Meanwhile, Dawson-Bryant had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7.8 runs) and they went ahead and made it six on Monday. They walked away with a 5-2 win over the Blue Devils.
Like Portsmouth, Dawson-Bryant also got a great game from a two-way player: Abbie Deeds. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 15 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. Deeds was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one run and one double.
In other batting news, Rylee Black was excellent, going 1-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Dawson-Bryant's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 9-3. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Portsmouth, their victory bumped their record up to 7-10.
Portsmouth might still be hurting after the 7-0 defeat they got from Dawson-Bryant in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Will the Trojans have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other softball content.
