The Amundsen Vikings are taking a road trip to face off against the Oak Park-River Forest Huskies at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Amundsen is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.4 runs per game this season.
Amundsen is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 15 runs on Monday, they were much more limited against Lane Tech on Thursday. They fell just short of the Champions by a score of 3-2. The Vikings' loss signaled the end of their four-game winning streak.
Amundsen saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Frances Oliver, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double. Nyla Carraway also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Meanwhile, Oak Park-River Forest won against Nazareth Academy on Thursday with 14 runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Friday. The Huskies blew past York 14-6. Considering the Huskies have won 11 matches by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Julia Mattiace and Elyssa Hasapis did most of the damage at the plate: Mattiace went 2-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and one double, while Hasapis went 3-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. The team also got some help courtesy of Avery Lane, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.
Oak Park-River Forest always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .528. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as York only posted an OBP of .364.
The win was the sixth in a row for Oak Park-River Forest, bringing their record up to 17-4. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.7 runs over those games. As for Amundsen, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-6.
Saturday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Amundsen has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .455. However, it's not like Oak Park-River Forest struggles in that department as they've averaged .475. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Amundsen suffered a grim 10-0 defeat to Oak Park-River Forest in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Vikings avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
