With the winter sports seasons in Florida finished, the focus on spring sports and the ability to get games in with the nation in the grips of the coronavirus outbreak is still up to the schools and their local districts, the Florida High School Athletic Association said Thursday in a release.
In a Thursday update concerning the global health pandemic, the association said "Schools and school districts should continue to follow state and local health department advisories regarding extracurricular activities and athletic contests."
In a FAQ segment of the release, a question asked if games should continue if schools allow students to play, to which the FHSAA replied "This is a school and/or school district-based decision. Provided your school and/or school district permits you to do so, and conditions are appropriate, returning to your regular schedule of games is permitted."
However, the
Miami Herald reported that spring contests are being canceled in some sections of the state while others are continuing on as scheduled. Games in Broward County will cease Monday according to the paper, while games in Miami-Dade are going on as planned for now."
