The Griffith Panthers had just enough and edged out The North Newton Spartans 3-2 on Tuesday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Panthers.
It was an exciting match in which no team won back-to-back sets, but at the end of the day Griffith got the one that really mattered. The final set scores came out to 25-10, 21-25, 25-22, 25-27, 15-9.
Griffith was led to victory by Milah Castro and Jasela Rutherford. Castro had 24 digs, eight aces, and six kills, while Rutherford had 17 kills, 13 digs, four aces, and two solo blocks. Sydney Jancosek was another key player, getting 17 digs.
North Newton's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Rylynn Klemz, who had 26 digs, nine kills, four solo blocks, and two aces. Another player making a difference was Blakeleigh Scheidt, who had 23 digs, five kills, four aces, and a solo block.
The win was their first at home , bumping their record up to 2-3. As for North Newton, they have traveled a rocky road this season, having lost 22 of their last 26 contests. That leaves them at a 4-11 record this season.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Griffith will square off against Hanover Central at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for North Newton, they will face off against Winamac at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
