Basketball Recap: Natalyn Lechuga Key Part of a Team Effort in Rams Win

Montwood won the last time they faced Coronado and things went their way on Friday too. The Montwood Rams put the hurt on the Coronado Thunderbirds with a sharp 55-34 victory. The match was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 36-13.

Montwood's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Natalyn Lechuga, who posted eight points in addition to six assists and six steals. That's the most steals Lechuga has posted since back in December of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Jazlynn Hernandez, who went 7 of 11 en route to 14 points along with five boards and three steals.

Lechuga wasn't the only one working in the assists department: Montwood was working as a unit and finished the game with 16 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Coronado only posted eight assists.

Several Thunderbirds players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Evah Morales, who had five points.

Montwood is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games, which provided a nice bump to their 19-9 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 50.6 points per game. As for Coronado, they have been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last eight contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-20 record this season.

Coincidentally, Montwood and Coronado will both be playing Eastwood the next time they take the court. Coronado will host Eastwood at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, while Montwood will head out to face them at 7:30 p.m. on January 31st.
