Volleyball Recap: Plant City Picks Up Third Consecutive Victory

Plant City took a three-set defeat the last time they faced off against Sumner, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Raiders had just enough and edged out the Stingrays 3-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Raiders have posted since September 4, 2024.

Plant City took Sumner into a fifth set where they got it done with a ten-point win. The match finished with set scores of 11-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-16, 15-5.

Plant City's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Maddie Vega, who had nine digs and three aces. That's the most aces Vega has posted since back in September of 2024. Olivia Ennis was another key player, hitting 85% for 18 kills and eight digs and four aces.

They weren't the only good server: Plant City was lethal from the service line and finished the game with 19 aces. They served six more aces than Sumner's also-impressive total of 13.

Several Stingrays players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Alana Mitchell, who had 20 digs and six aces. Mitchell is crushing it when it comes to aces: she's served at least three every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Mirly Vargas, who had eight kills, four aces, three digs, and two blocks.

The win (which was Plant City's third in a row) raised their record to 3-0. As for Sumner, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 2-2.

Plant City has already played their next match, a 3-2 loss against Hillsborough on the 2nd. As for Sumner, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 3-1 victory against Freedom on the 2nd.
