Axtell is 2-8 against Amherst since October of 2016 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. The Wildcats will head out to face off against the Broncos at 5:00 p.m. This will be Axtell's first chance to prove their worth in the conference.
On Tuesday, Axtell didn't have quite enough to beat Arapahoe and fell 3-2. While the Wildcats didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Warriors 25-15 in the first set.
Axtell started the match hot and won the first two sets, but they struggled down the stretch and lost the last three. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 15-25, 12-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-11.
Meanwhile, Amherst came up short against Kearney Catholic on Tuesday and fell 3-1. The Broncos have struggled against the Stars recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive lost matchup.
While Amherst had to settle for second, they sure made a game of it, scoring at least 18 points in every set they played. The match finished with set scores of 25-23, 18-25, 25-23, 25-18.
Despite the defeat, Amherst saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Breckyn Layne Veskerna had 23 digs and one assist.
Axtell's loss dropped their record down to 12-10. As for Amherst, their defeat dropped their record down to 17-5.
Axtell couldn't quite get it done against Amherst when the teams last played back in October of 2024 as they fell 2-0. Can the Wildcats avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
