Lake Travis (Austin, Texas) quarterback Garrett Gilbert and Washington (South Bend, Ind.) basketball star Skylar Diggins were announced as the National Male and Female Athletes of the year and each immediately thanked a combination of God, family, Gatorade, teammates, community and fellow nominees for the prestigious award, which is voted on by some 350 media members, coaches and dignitaries.
“Mom, this is for you,” Diggins told about the 200 on hand which featured former Gatorade winners Kevin Durant, Matthew Stafford, Jessica Mendoza and Misty May-Treanor as presenters along with anchor Stuart Scott, of ESPN.
Diggins was one of 12 athletes at the luncheon, all of whom earned Player of the Year honors for their specific sports. All walked the red carpet at Wednesday’s ESPYs, which is taped and then televised Sunday on ESPN, but Diggins and Gilbert were able to attend the show and were announced at the Nokia Theatre.
Diggins, also the MaxPreps Basketball Player of the Year, averaged 29.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 5.4 steals per game, leading the nation’s No. 2 team to a 26-1 record.
A 5-9 shooting guard, Diggins was also named MVP of the McDonald’s All-American Game and the WBCA All-American games in the same week. She holds school records in career points, single-season points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks. “Honestly, this is such a blessing,” Diggins told MaxPreps after the two-hour ceremony. “I have to take it all in. To sit back and think of all the great athletes who have won this in the past just makes me want to go work out.”
Gilbert was equally humbled.
Also the MaxPreps Male Football and Athlete of the Year, Gilbert backed up a remarkable junior season with an even better senior campaign.
Amazing considering he had a new head coach and was coming off shoulder surgery.
The 6-foot-4, 205-pound quarterback completed 302 of 436 passes for 4,851 yards and 55 touchdowns (with just six interceptions). He also rushed 115 times for 767 yards and 23 touchdowns. He’s the Texas state-record holder in career (12,537) and single-season (4,851) passing yards and he ranks second in career TDs (136), attempts (1,368) and completions (895).
He was even better in his final three playoff games, combining to complete 66 of 91 for 983 yards and 11 touchdowns, while rushing for 262 yards and six more scores. In the state title game, he completed 25 of 34 for 358 and four scores and rushed 16 times for 78 yards and two touchdowns.
Lake Travis finished 16-0 and he won his final 29 games in high school.
Gilbert is headed just down the road in Austin to play college ball at Texas.
“It’s an unbelievable honor just to be here, let alone win the award,” Gilbert said. “It’s such an honor to be mentioned in the same breath as Payton Manning. He has always been one of my idols so to win this after he did is an incredible honor.”
