The Gregory-Portland Wildcats had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 27.3 points), and they went ahead and made it four on Friday. They breezed by Mercedes on the road to the tune of 56-7. The result was nothing new for Gregory-Portland, who have now won five matches by 22 points or more so far this season.
Gabriel Juarez was his usual excellent self, rushing for 91 yards and three touchdowns on only 11 carries. Gregory-Portland also got a significant boost from Cody Adame, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 100 yards.
Gregory-Portland's win bumped their record up to 7-1. As for Mercedes, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 2-6.
Gregory-Portland will be playing in front of their home fans against Valley View at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Valley View will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings (they are ranked 1078th, while Gregory-Portland is ranked 285th). As for Mercedes, they will head out on the road to face off against Edcouch-Elsa at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Edcouch-Elsa is coming into the matchup on a four-game losing streak.
