The Scott County Cardinals will challenge the Woodford County Yellowjackets at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The last three games Scott County has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
Scott County can't be too worried about heading out to take on Woodford County: they just beat Great Crossing at home, who had been dominant on their own field up to that point. The Cardinals beat the Warhawks on Tuesday by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 4-2.
Tyler Wands spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on three hits.
On the hitting side, Scott County's win was truly a team effort as six different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Keagan Hurt, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one double. That's the most RBI Hurt has posted since back in March.
Meanwhile, Woodford County hadn't done well against Paul Laurence Dunbar recently (they were 0-8 in their previous eight matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Yellowjackets sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 4-3 victory over the Bulldogs.
The team relied heavily on Nolan Asher, who went 1-for-3 with three stolen bases and one run.
Scott County pushed their record up to 21-8 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of 1.75 runs across that stretch. As for Woodford County, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 23-12 record this season.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Scott County has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.4 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Woodford County struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.3 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Scott County skirted past Woodford County 4-3 when the teams last played back in March. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cardinals since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
