The San Juan Broncos will take on the Grand County Red Devils at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. San Juan is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 13.3 runs per game this season.
San Juan took a seven-run loss the last time they faced off against South Sevier, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Broncos skirted past the Rams 10-8. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last seven times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Ella Stearns spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and four unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up 11 Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Averie Gilson was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one home run, one triple, and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Kheirra Keith, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and three RBI.
They weren't the only ones working in the home run department: San Juan lost a few balls and finished the game with three home runs. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as South Sevier didn't launched any.
Meanwhile, Grand County was not able to break out of their rough patch last Thursday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They came up short against Beaver, falling 13-5.
Grand County also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Caydence Bowden gave up four earned (and nine unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up eight Ks.
At the plate, Danika Hirschfeld and Kyndee Cluff did some serious damage despite the final result: Hirschfeld went 1-for-4 with three RBI and one double, while Cluff went 1-for-2 with two runs and one double.
San Juan pushed their record up to 16-1 with the win, which was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Grand County, their loss dropped their record down to 9-8.
Saturday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. San Juan has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .516. However, it's not like Grand County struggles in that department as they've averaged .452. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went San Juan's way against Grand County when the teams last played last Tuesday, as San Juan made off with a 21-4 win. Do the Broncos have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Red Devils turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
