Baseball Recap: South Newton Takes a Loss

South Newton extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to 14 on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 0-9 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost an 8-7 heartbreaker at the hands of the Faith Christian Eagles. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Eagles this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 11-10 on Tuesday.

Cayden Martin was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in two of his four plate appearances with four stolen bases and one run. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played. Keaton Luttrell was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one home run.

As for Faith Christian, their victory ended a seven-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 3-4. That's two games straight that they have won by just one run.

On Faith Christian's side, Christian Carlson made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out eight batters over six innings while giving up three earned (and four unearned) runs off five hits. That's the most strikeouts Carlson has posted since back in April of 2024. He was also solid in the batter's box, earning one run and three stolen bases.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ethan Seubring, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two doubles, and one run. Those doubles marked the first that he has hit this season. Another player making a difference was Carter Haynes, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. South Newton will square off against Watseka at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Faith Christian, they will host Frontier at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Falcons' pitching crew has only allowed 1.8 runs per game this season, so the Eagles' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
