After a string of four wins, the Douglas Bulldogs's good fortune finally ran out on Wednesday. They took a hard 62-48 fall against Rio Rico. The match was a 23-23 toss-up at halftime, but Douglas was outscored by Rio Rico in the second.
Douglas' loss came despite strong showings from Francia Rubio and Scarlette Ruiz . Rubio scored 19 points along with three steals and three blocks, while Ruiz scored 14 points along with five steals. The match was Ruiz 's fifth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Keyra Espinosa, who scored six points along with five rebounds.
Douglas' loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 17-4. As for Rio Rico, their win was their eighth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 13-2.
Douglas will square off against Amphitheater at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Amphitheater will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Arizona Rankings (they are ranked 93rd, while Douglas is ranked 26th). As for Rio Rico, they will look to defend their home court on Monday against Palo Verde at 3:00 p.m.
