Charleroi is 2-7 against McGuffey since April of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Monday. The Cougars will look to defend their home field against the Highlanders at 4:00 p.m. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.
Charleroi was handed a ten-run loss in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene on Friday. They had just enough and edged out Steel Valley 5-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Cougars have posted since May 3, 2024.
Ariahna Blouse spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned runs on six hits and racked up six Ks.
On the hitting side, Rya Dipietrantonio was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. Those RBI were her first of the season. Lyla Brunner was another key player, scoring a run and stealing two bases.
Meanwhile, McGuffey got themselves on the board against Brownsville on Wednesday, but Brownsville never followed suit. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Falcons, sneaking past 1-0. The one-run effort marked the Highlanders' lowest-scoring game of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.
The result came thanks to Makenna Crothers's shutout, as she gave up just two hits.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Sidney Dobrzynski, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, one double, and one RBI.
McGuffey now has a winning record of 3-2. As for Charleroi, their win bumped their record up to 3-4.
Charleroi couldn't quite finish off McGuffey when the teams last played back in May of 2019 and fell 5-3. Can the Cougars avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
