Vienna is 0-9 against Carterville since April of 2015 but things could change on Thursday. The Eagles will be playing in front of their home fans against the Lions at 4:30 p.m. Vienna is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9 runs per game this season.
Things were looking good for Vienna after they put the first points on the board on Tuesday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They fell 6-3 to Massac County. Eagles fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Patriots since on Tuesday.
Alli Vinson spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and two unearned) runs on six hits.
At the plate, Rayonna Ridley made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with one home run and two runs. That home run marked the first that she launched this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Anniston Steinmann, who went 1-for-4 with one triple and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Carterville won against Paducah Tilghman on Friday with ten runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Tuesday. The Lions didn't even let Johnston City on the board, marking the Lions' second-straight 10-0 shutout. The Lions might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five contests by six runs or more this season.
Caidence Phillips made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out ten over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than nine strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, Colbie Bennett was incredible, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, one triple, and one double. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April of 2024. Audrina Sloan was another key player, scoring two runs while going 2-for-2.
Carterville was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .450. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
Carterville pushed their record up to 6-2 with the victory, which was their 21st straight at home dating back to last season. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.6 runs on average over those games. As for Vienna, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 4-8.
Thursday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Vienna hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .333. However, it's not like Carterville struggles in that department as they've averaged .330. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Vienna suffered a grim 10-0 defeat to Carterville in their previous meeting back in March of 2024. Will the Eagles have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other softball content.
