PETAL, Miss. -
Petal (Miss.) came into Saturday's contest ranked No. 2 in Mississippi, but was stunned by
Meridian (Miss.), 45-21. Meridian was ranked at No. 28 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings for Mississippi coming into the week.
After taking the lead on a touchdown run in the second quarter, the Wildcats led 24-14 at the half.
Meridian expanded its lead to 17 points entering the fourth quarter. MHS scored two times in the third, including once on a
Richard McQuarley touchdown run.
A 7-point fourth quarter was enough to cement the win for the Wildcats, as they pushed the final margin of victory to 24.
The loss comes after Petal defeated Jim Hill 42-7 last week. The win was a nice bounce back for Meridian, which lost to Brandon last week, 42-14. The loss broke Petal's two-game winning streak. The victory snapped Meridian's two-game losing streak.
Petal (7-2) goes up against Forest Hill in a 6A Region 3 game matchup next week, while Meridian (6-3) locks horns with Terry also in a 6A Region 3 game.
