The South Point Red Raiders pushed their score all the way to 59 on Friday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They took a 73-59 bruising from Ashbrook. While losing is never fun, South Point can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 222nd, while Ashbrook is ranked 26th).
When it comes to explaining why South Point lost, one person who can't be blamed is Greyson Kines. Despite the final result, he scored 21 points along with four steals. Christian Petty was another key contributor, scoring six points along with six assists and four steals.
Issac Byers Jr was his usual excellent self, scoring 24 points along with seven rebounds and five assists for Ashbrook. The contest was Byers Jr's seventh in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Ayron Jackson, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 11 rebounds.
South Point has fallen quite a ways from their 25-5 record last season and are now at 2-4. As for Ashbrook, the win for they keeps them at an undefeated 7-0.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. South Point will face off against Forestview at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Forestview knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past four contests -- so hopefully South Point likes a good challenge. As for Ashbrook, they will head out on the road to face off against Kings Mountain at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Kings Mountain has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
