The Rensselaer Rams will take on the Cairo-Durham Mustangs at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Rensselaer is coming into the game on a three-game losing streak.
On Monday, Rensselaer came up short against Catskill and fell 7-4.
Robert Fink Jr made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one stolen base. The team also got some help courtesy of Cooper Bibighaus, who got on base in two of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Cairo-Durham). They blew past Berlin/New Lebanon 21-9 on Monday. With that victory, the Mustangs brought their scoring average up to 7.6 runs per game.
Nico Martines made a splash while hitting and pitching. He struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in April of 2025. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 5-for-6 with two stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI.
In other batting news, Jake Young was incredible, getting on base in five of his six plate appearances with five stolen bases, five runs, and one triple. He also hit a double, marking his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Logan Walz, who went 3-for-6 with four runs, two doubles, and one triple.
Cairo-Durham always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .600. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
The win made it two in a row for Cairo-Durham and bumps their season record up to 6-3. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.5 runs over those games. As for Rensselaer, their loss dropped their record down to 3-7.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Rensselaer has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.1 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Cairo-Durham struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8.2 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Rensselaer was able to grind out a solid win over Cairo-Durham when the teams last played back in May of 2024, winning 10-5. Do the Rams have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Mustangs turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
