3A Western Slope recap October 8, 2013
Adding to the longest winning streak in 3A Western Slope this week, Palisade beat Rifle 28-27. The victory was the sixth in a row for the Bulldogs.
Montezuma-Cortez fell to Delta 41-12 last week, the largest margin of any game. Randy Haley was a bright spot for the Panthers, as he ran for 130 yards in the defeat.
The Panthers' offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Cade Gafford threw for 141 and 2 touchdowns and Ryan Whiteside had 90 yards receiving. On the ground Jonney Pounce contributed 205 yards. Devin Williams helped Delta's passing attack out by catching 1 ball for 35 yards.
Pounce provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Delta defeated Montezuma-Cortez. Pounce's key target this week was Whiteside, who caught 6 passes for 90 yards.
Gafford put up the best numbers in passing as Ben Johnson's team topped Casey Coulter's team.
The Panthers' Gafford and Whiteside led the league in both passing and receiving yards. 6-6 quarterback Gafford has thrown for 927 yards this season, while Whiteside has 32 catches for 444 yards. Palisade's Dalton Hannigan leads the league in rushing yards with 722.
An important game coming up in the league this week will be when Joe Ramunno's team takes on Steamboat Springs. At the moment, the Bulldogs are in first, while the Sailors are in third.
Palisade and the Bears played the closest game in 3A Western Slope this week, with Palisade eventually emerging with a 28-27 victory. Levi Hoaglund threw for 97 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran for 55 yards in the win.
