The Frederick Douglass Broncos will venture away from home to square off against the Paris Greyhounds at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Frederick Douglass has four straight wins, Paris has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
While Frederick Douglass' victory against Henry Clay wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Broncos won by a run and slipped past the Blue Devils 7-6.
Haley McGuire was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs off one hit. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one home run.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Emma Dunn, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles, one stolen base, and two RBI. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high. Kavery Myrick also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.
Frederick Douglass was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Henry Clay only posted a batting average of .259.
Paris couldn't beat George Rogers Clark on Wednesday even though they stacked four runs on them in the third inning. The Greyhounds came up short against the Cardinals, falling 19-4.
Paris saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kay Oliver, who went 1-for-2 with one run and one RBI.
Frederick Douglass pushed their record up to 11-5-1 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Paris, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-7.
Friday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Frederick Douglass hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .344. However, it's not like Paris struggles in that department as they've averaged .348. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went Frederick Douglass' way against Paris in their previous meeting back in May of 2024, as Frederick Douglass made off with a 10-0 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Broncos since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
