The Purvis Tornadoes will venture away from home to square off against the Oak Grove Warriors at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Purvis is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8 runs per game this season.
Oak Grove will face off against a team with plenty of momentum: Purvis extended their winning streak to three on Tuesday. The Tornadoes came out on top against Lumberton by a score of 8-3.
Hayden Shattles tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out 12 over six innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one hit any time he's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Tyce Shepherd, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. That double was his first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Nash Teater, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run.
Meanwhile, Oak Grove made easy work of Poplarville on Tuesday and carried off a 9-1 win.
Oak Grove also got a great performance from Coby Caillet as he struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits (and only one walk). Those six strikeouts gave Caillet a new career-high.
At the plate, Eric Booth Jr. and Mac McDaniel did most of the damage at the plate: Booth Jr. went 2-for-3 with one home run, four runs, and one stolen base, while McDaniel went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases, five RBI, and one double. Booth Jr. continues to improve, besting his previous run total in each of the last three games he's played. Kendrell Roberts was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Purvis' record now sits at 4-1. As for Oak Grove, their record is now 2-3.
Oak Grove's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Purvis hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .316. It's a different story for Oak Grove, though, as they've only averaged .237. Will they be able to contain Purvis' hitters?
Purvis skirted past Oak Grove 5-4 in their previous meeting on Friday. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Tornadoes since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
