McMinnville and Sherwood are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2019, but likely not for long. The Grizzlies will be playing in front of their home fans against the Bowmen at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
McMinnville took a loss when they played away from home on Friday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Tuesday. Their pitchers stepped up to hand Liberty a 12-0 shutout. The win continues a trend for the Grizzlies in their matchups with the Falcons: they've now won nine in a row.
Kaylee Dinger and MacKenzie Roberts made a big impact no matter where they played. Throwing, Dinger pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Roberts tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Dinger has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. At bat, Dinger went 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double, while Roberts went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
In other pitching news, Rylan Carton looked comfortable as she struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up a single walk in four consecutive appearances.
Back at the plate, McMinnville let Laney Reed and Vivian Moore run wild. Reed went 2-for-3 with four runs, one stolen base, and one double, while Moore got on base in all four of her plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. That double marked the first that Reed has hit this season. Natalie Fernandez was another key player, going 1-for-2 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run.
McMinnville always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .645. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Liberty only posted an OBP of .167.
Meanwhile, Sherwood waltzed into their game on Tuesday with eight straight wins... but they left with nine. They put the hurt on the Crimson Tide with a sharp 13-3 victory. Sherwood's win was all the more impressive since the Crimson Tide were averaging only 3.09 runs allowed on the season.
The team relied heavily on Jordyn Henderson, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Hollie Maughan, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.
Sherwood pushed their record up to 21-2 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for McMinnville, their victory bumped their record up to 16-6.
McMinnville came up short against Sherwood in their previous meeting two weeks ago, falling 7-2. Will the Grizzlies have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other softball content.
