The Morehead Panthers fought the good fight in their overtime game against the T.W. Andrews Red Raiders on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Red Raiders by a score of 78-75. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Morehead came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 161st, while T.W. Andrews is ranked 392nd).
When it comes to explaining why Morehead lost, one person who can't be blamed is Makel Smith. Despite the final result, he scored 34 points along with three steals and two blocks. Smith has been hot recently, having posted 23 or more points the last six times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Avery Bigelow, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Morehead has traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four games, which put a noticeable dent in their 12-8 record this season. As for T.W. Andrews, their win bumped their record up to 7-16.
Coincidentally, the pair will both be playing Walkertown the next time they take the court. Morehead will head out to face Walkertown at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, while T.W. Andrews will host them at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
