Basketball: Parkville Star in Critical Condition
Parkville High School’s leading basketball scorer, Josh Corbett, is in critical condition following a car accident last Friday night.
Corbett, entering his junior year, was a passenger in his girlfriend’s family car on the way to vacation in Virginia Beach. The driver apparently fell asleep, causing the car to crash into a ravine. All four people in the car lived.
Corbett suffered a broken right shoulder and had several lacerations throughout his body. Corbett was originally in a medically-induced coma but is now out of it and somewhat alert.
“There are still some issues with head injuries,” Knights coach Rod Norris told the Baltimore Sun. “We hope it works out, and every day that he’s alive is a positive.”
Arundel A.D. Steps Down
Bernie Walter announced he is stepping down as athletic director at Arundel High School after 27 years in the position.
“It was time to stop,” Walter told The Capital.
He also ended his 37-year career as a physical education teacher and department chair.
Walter has won a Maryland-record 10 baseball state championships during his illustrious career, and was the Athletic Director’s Association’s 2002 Athletic Director of the Year.
He has a 595-175 record in 34 seasons at the helm of the school’s baseball program.
He is undecided as to whether or not he will return as the school’s baseball coach next spring, but plans to make a decision once the new athletic director is hired this fall.
Girls Basketball: McDonogh Coach Headed to College
Tom Gizzi has resigned as McDonogh’s girls basketball head coach and accepted a position as the women’s assistant basketball coach at Loyola College.
Gizzi’s five-year record was 100-32 and included trips to the IAAM A Final Four all five years of his tenure, including one trip to the championship game.
Gizzi came to McDonogh from The Hill School in Pennsylvania where he had an 88-24 record, giving him a 77 percent career winning percentage.
Gizzi hopes to bring his winning ways to Loyola, where coach Joe Logan’s Loyola squad is coming off a losing season (13-17 overall, 7-11 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference).
Football: River Hill’s Eaddy and Redd Make Commitments
River Hill defensive back Leron Eaddy became the third Hawk senior-to-be to make a commitment to play at a Division I school when he pulled the trigger on an offer from Central Michigan University earlier in the month.
The 5-foot-10, 185-pounder will join high school teammate Malek Redd, a 5-7, 170-pound running back, who committed to Central Michigan last month.
Hawks running back Michael Campanaro pledged Wake Forest in April.
The trio helped the Hawks to a 14-0 record and 2A state title in 2007.
