The Cairo Pilots on the road again on Monday and play against the Caruthersville Tigers at 4:30 p.m. on January 22nd. Having both just faced considerable losses, both teams are looking to turn things around.
Cairo suffered their biggest defeat since November 24, 2023 on Saturday. They were beaten by Pinckneyville 55-27. Cairo has not had much luck with Pinckneyville recently, as the team's come up short the last two times they've met.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the most dominant came from Shanti Taylor, who scored nine points. Another player making a difference was Aaliyah Wilkerson, who scored eight points.
Meanwhile, this season hasn't been kind to Caruthersville, who are still winless after their fifth game. They took a serious blow against Marked Tree last Friday, falling 64-21. While losing is never fun, Caruthersville can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 488th in Missouri, while Marked Tree is ranked 70th in Arkansas).
Cairo has been struggling recently, as they've lost nine of their last ten contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-16 record this season. As for Caruthersville, they bumped their record down to 0-5 with that loss, which was their 11th straight at home.
Cairo strolled past Caruthersville when the teams last played back in January of 2023 by a score of 55-41. The rematch might be a little tougher for Cairo since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
