The Caruthersville Tigers will be playing in front of their home fans against the Cairo Pilots at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The pair have had a bumpy ride up to this point with 24 consecutive losses for Caruthersville and four for Cairo.
Last Friday, Caruthersville took a serious blow against Marked Tree, falling 64-21. While losing is never fun, Caruthersville can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 488th in Missouri, while Marked Tree is ranked 70th in Arkansas).
Cairo suffered their biggest loss since November 24, 2023 on Saturday. They were dealt a 55-27 defeat at the hands of Pinckneyville. Cairo was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 36-12.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Shanti Taylor, who scored nine points. Another player making a difference was Aaliyah Wilkerson, who scored eight points.
Caruthersville's loss was their 11th straight at home, which bumped their record down to 0-5. Those losses could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 16.9 points per game. As for Cairo, they have traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost nine of their last ten games, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-16 record this season.
Things could have been worse for Caruthersville, but things could have been a whole lot better as they took a 55-41 loss to Cairo in their previous matchup back in January of 2023.
