Cuyahoga Heights dropped down to 7-5 on Thursday, ending the team's three-game streak of wins. They fell just short of the Independence Blue Devils by a score of 8-7. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Blue Devils this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 3-0 last Monday.
Aly Williams made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and got on base in three of her four plate appearances with four stolen bases, four runs, and one double. Another player making a difference was Sophia Meklemburg, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one double.
As for Independence, the victory was the seventh in a row for them, bringing their record up to 9-3. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.9 runs over those games.
On Independence's side, Lila Manfredonia made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 13 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and five unearned) runs off four hits. Manfredonia has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in six consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all five of her plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.
In other batting news, Rabecca Gibson was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double. Julia Chait was another key player, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with two runs.
Looking ahead, Cuyahoga Heights will host Brookside at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. The Cardinals have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 12.94 runs per game on average), something the Red Wolves will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Independence, they will head out on the road to take on Wickliffe at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
