Basketball Game Preview: Hampton Roads Academy Navigators vs. Maury Commodores

The Hampton Roads Academy Navigators and the Maury Commodores will face off at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday without much rest having both just played. Both teams are coming into the game red-hot, with Hampton Roads Academy sitting on five straight victories and Maury on eight.

On Friday, Hampton Roads Academy humbled Indian River with a 56-27 victory. The Navigators have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won three matchups by 29 points or more this season.

Nalani Carter and Kenzie Cooper were among the main playmakers for Hampton Roads Academy as the former dropped a double-double on 15 points and 16 rebounds and the latter shot 4-for-7 from long range and dropped a double-double on 18 points and 11 boards. Cooper is on a roll when it comes to boards, as she's now pulled down nine or more in the last 11 games she's played dating back to last season. The team also got some help courtesy of Zuriel Pendleton-Morant, who posted ten points.

Hampton Roads Academy smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive rebounds in seven consecutive contests.

Meanwhile, Maury was able to grind out a solid win over Miller School of Albemarle on Friday, taking the game 48-38. The 48-point effort marked the Commodores' lowest-scoring game of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.

Maury's win came from a few key players Hampton Roads Academy will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Nyla Brown, who had 12 points. Another player making a difference was Myla Parker, who earned 12 points.

Hampton Roads Academy's victory bumped their record up to 6-1. As for Maury, their win bumped their record up to 8-0.

Hampton Roads Academy barely slipped by Maury in their previous meeting back in December of 2023, winning 43-42. Does Hampton Roads Academy have another victory up their sleeve, or will Maury turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
