3A District 2 recap October 8, 2013
Raton was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from fourth to second in 3A District 2. The Tigers defeated Santa Fe Indian 53-0 earlier in the week.
Raton took down the Braves 53-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
Taos's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Kevin McCarty threw for 76 and 1 touchdown and Devin Ortega had 37 yards receiving. On the ground Isaac Gonzales chipped in 149 yards. Gonzales helped Taos' passing attack out by catching 1 ball for 12 yards.
Gonzales provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Tigers defeated Espanola Valley. Gonzales' favorite target this week was Ortega, who caught 2 passes for 37 yards.
Gonzales was the most successful running back in the league this week. In 21 carries, he ran for 149 yards as Taos defeated the Sundevils. Jaziel Galindo also contributed to the rushing game with 28 yards on the ground.
Thanks to the talents of McCarty and Gonzales, Flavio Lopez's team has been able to do all sorts of things on offense. McCarty is tops in the league in passing with 398 yards, while Gonzales has rushed for 441 yards this season. Tops in the league in receiving yards is Robertson's James Gonzales III, with 136 yards on 6 catches.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Pojoaque Valley takes on the Tigers. At the moment, the Elks/Elkettes are in third, while Taos is in first.
