The Morgantown Mohigans will challenge the Jefferson Cougars at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Both teams are coming into the contest red-hot, with Morgantown sitting on five straight wins and Jefferson on seven.
Morgantown's pitching crew heads into the match hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Wednesday. They blew past Buckhannon-Upshur 12-0.
Morgantown let CARPER MESSERLY and GRACE ROBINSON run wild. MESSERLY scored three runs while going 3-for-3, while ROBINSON scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. Those three hits gave MESSERLY a new career-high. MADI STONE was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
Morgantown was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .448. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Jefferson). They put the hurt on Martinsburg with a sharp 16-3 victory on Tuesday. The Cougars might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four games by eight runs or more this season.
Jersey Rummel made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than one walk in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 1-for-4.
In other pitching news, Caroline ABE looked comfortable as she pitched four innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits.
Back at the plate, Jefferson got a massive performance out of Becca Munslow, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Brooke Allen, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base.
Morgantown's win was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 9-6. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games. As for Jefferson, their win bumped their record up to 7-0.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Friday. Morgantown hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.7 home runs per game. However, it's not like Jefferson struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 1.1 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Morgantown was able to grind out a solid victory over Jefferson in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, winning 8-3. Will the Mohigans repeat their success, or do the Cougars have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
