Josh Allen, Class of 2014, Firebaugh (Calif.) – Buffalo BillsPerhaps the best performance of the opening weekend went to Allen, who led the Bills to a wild comeback against the Ravens with 394 passing yards and four total touchdowns. The reigning NFL MVP racked up 5,269 yards and 59 touchdowns at Firebaugh.
Geno Smith, 2009, Miramar (Fla.) – Las Vegas RaidersSmith impressed in his Raider debut with 362 yards and a touchdown in a 20-13 win over the Patriots. Smith was a first team All-State selection in his senior year at Miramar.
Justin Herbert, 2016, Sheldon (Eugene, Ore.) – Los Angeles ChargersHerbert, who tossed for 2,915 yards and 36 touchdowns during his senior year at Sheldon, had as good an opener as anyone with 318 yards and three TDs without an interception in a win over the Chiefs.
Michael Penix Jr., 2018, Tampa Bay Tech (Tampa, Fla.) – Atlanta FalconsPenix accumulated 4,243 yards and 61 touchdowns with Tampa Bay Tech. On Sunday, he started with 298 yards and a passing and rushing TD in a loss to the Bucs.
Joe Flacco, 2003, Audubon (N.J.) – Cleveland BrownsA former three-star recruit for the Green Wave, the 40-year-old went 31 for 45 with 290 yards and a touchdown in a loss to the Bengals in his first Week 1 start since 2022.
Drake Maye, 2021, Myers Park (Charlotte, N.C.) – New England PatriotsMaye lost his senior year at Myers Park due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He had 287 yards with a TD and an interception in a loss to the Raiders.
Brock Purdy, 2018, Perry (Gilbert, Ariz.) – San Francisco 49ersThe former "Mr. Irrelevant" threw for 4,405 yards and ran for 1,017 more as a senior at Perry. He had two TDs with 277 yards in a comeback win against the Seahawks.
Daniel Jones, 2015, Charlotte Latin (Charlotte, N.C.) – Indianapolis ColtsAfter nearly 7,000 yards and 100 touchdowns in his prep career, Jones made a big splash in his Colts debut, going 22 of 29 for 272 yards with two rushing TDs in a win over the Dolphins.
Patrick Mahomes, 2014, Whitehouse (Texas) – Kansas City ChiefsOver his final two years at Whitehouse, Mahomes threw for 8,458 yards and ran for 1,198. On Sunday, he threw for 258 and ran for 57 with two total TDs against the Chargers.
Matt Stafford, 2006, Highland Park (Dallas, Texas) – Los Angeles RamsStafford led Highland Park to a 15-0 state championship run as a senior. He eclipsed the 60,000-yard passing mark for his career in the season opener as the Rams beat the Texans.
Aaron Rodgers, 2002, Pleasant Valley (Chico, Calif.) – Pittsburgh SteelersVintage Aaron Rodgers was on display in his Steelers debut with 244 yards and four TDs against his former Jets teammates. He threw for 2,466 yards as a senior at Pleasant Valley.
Jayden Daniels, 2019, Cajon (San Bernardino, Calif.) – Washington CommandersDaniels compiled more than 12,000 yards of total offense in two varsity seasons at Cajon. He led the Commanders to victory with 233 yards and a touchdown against the Giants.
Jared Goff, 2013, Marin Catholic (Kentfield, Calif.) – Detroit LionsGoff was a state finalist with 40 touchdown passes as a senior at Marin Catholic. He completed 31 of 39 passes for 225 yards and a touchdown in a loss to the Packers.
Justin Fields, 2018, Harrison (Kennesaw, Ga.) – New York JetsDespite a loss to the Steelers, Fields played well in his Jets debut with three total touchdowns. He had 69 total TDs over his final two years at Harrison.
Spencer Rattler, 2019, Pinnacle (Phoenix, Ariz.) – New Orleans SaintsThe former Pinnacle Pioneer had 11,083 career passing yards with 116 touchdowns. He began his 2025 with 214 yards in a loss to the Cardinals.
Lamar Jackson, 2015, Boynton Beach (Fla.) – Baltimore RavensJackson had 209 passing yards and 70 rushing with three total TDs in a last-second loss to the Bills. He accumulated 3,887 total yards over his final two years at Boynton Beach.
Jordan Love, 2016, Liberty (Bakersfield, Calif.) – Green Bay PackersLove had more than 4,000 yards and 42 touchdowns over his final two years at Liberty. He got the Packers off to a hot start with 188 yards and two TDs against the Lions.
Dak Prescott, 2011, Haughton (La.) – Dallas CowboysPrescott won a Louisiana state championship as a senior at Haughton. He opened his 10th NFL season with the Cowboys going 21 of 34 for 188 yards in a loss to the Eagles.
C.J. Stroud, 2020, Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) – Houston TexansThe Rams held Stroud mostly in check on Sunday with 188 yards, no touchdowns and an interception. The former Rancho Cucamonga Cougar had 6,569 yards and 70 TDs in his prep career.
Trevor Lawrence, 2018, Cartersville (Ga.) – Jacksonville JaguarsLawrence was 53-3 with two state championships as a four-year starter for Cartersville while breaking Georgia state records with 13,902 yards and 161 TDs. He got the Jaguars off to a 1-0 start with 178 yards and a touchdown against the Panthers.
Bo Nix, 2019, Pinson Valley (Pinson, Ala.) – Denver BroncosThe lone Alabama product on this list won two state championships at Pinson Valley. Nix led the Broncos over the Titans going 25-of-40 for 176 yards and a touchdown.
Russell Wilson, 2007, Collegiate (Richmond, Va.) – New York GiantsWilson was a former state champion with more than 4,100 total yards and 52 total TDs as a senior. He was fairly quiet to begin his 17th NFL season with 168 yards and no touchdowns in a loss to the Commanders.
Baker Mayfield, 2013, Lake Travis (Austin, Texas) – Tampa Bay BuccaneersAs a junior, Mayfield led the Cavaliers to a 16-0 state championship run. He led the Buccaneers to a 1-0 start against the Falcons with three touchdown passes.
Kyler Murray, 2015, Allen (Texas) – Arizona CardinalsMurray led the Eagles to back-to-back 16-0 state title campaigns and was later drafted in the first round of both the MLB (No. 9 overall in 2018) and NFL (No. 1 overall in 2019) drafts. He had 163 passing yards and two TDs in a win over the Saints.
Bryce Young, 2020, Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) – Carolina PanthersAt Mater Dei, Young was the co-MaxPreps National Player of the Year as a senior. He went 18 of 35 for 154 yards, a TD and two interceptions in a loss to the Jaguars.
Jalen Hurts, 2016, Channelview (Texas) – Philadelphia EaglesHurts and the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles opened 2025 with a win over the Cowboys. Hurts was 19 of 23 for 152 yards in the air to go with 62 yards on the ground with a pair of rushing scores. Hurts had nearly 3,500 passing yards with 34 touchdowns and close to 1,700 rushing yards in his career at Channelview.
Sam Darnold, 2015, San Clemente (Calif.) – Seattle SeahawksDarnold tossed for 2,985 yards and 39 TDs as a senior at San Clemente. On Sunday, he went for 150 yards in a loss to the 49ers.
Tua Tagovailoa, 2017, Saint Louis (Honolulu, Hawaii) – Miami DolphinsA Hawaii state champion as a senior at Saint Louis, Tagovailoa was 14 of 23 for 114 yards and a touchdown in a loss to the Colts.
Joe Burrow, 2015, Athens (The Plains, Ohio) – Cincinnati BengalsNot huge numbers (14-23, 113 yards and a TD) but Burrow led the Bengals to a win over the Browns. Burrow threw 63 touchdown passes in his senior year alone at Athens.
Cam Ward, 2020, Columbia (West Columbia, Texas) – Tennessee TitansIt was a rough debut for this year's No. 1 overall pick. The Columbia alum went 12 of 28 for 112 yards without reaching the end zone in a loss to the Broncos.
J.J. McCarthy, 2021, IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) – Minnesota VikingsLed a dramatic comeback win for the Vikings over the Bears in his NFL debut. Helped IMG Academy go 9-0 as a senior, throwing for 1,440 yards with 16 touchdowns.
Caleb Williams, 2021, Gonzaga (Washington, D.C.) – Chicago BearsOne of the nation's top quarterback recruits coming out of Gonzaga, Williams totaled 268 yards and two touchdowns in Chicago's Monday Night Football loss to the Vikings.
